“Every day children learn something that helps them gather all the information they need to make good progress –like a jigsaw. When they have all the pieces and days are not missing the picture is much clearer!”
Why does attendance matter?
At Victoria Infant & Nursery School we know that attending school every day will help to give your child the best possible start in life. Good attendance is key to your child doing well at school and will set them up with good habits for later life and the working world.
It will also give your child the opportunity to:
· make lots of friends, develop social skills and feel included
· learn lots of new skills and gain further understanding of the world
· increase his/her confidence and self esteem
· build lasting relationships
· achieve their potential and fulfil their
You can help us to help your child by encouraging regular school attendance.
Every half day absence from school has to be
classified either authorised or unauthorised.
Authorised absences are mornings or afternoons away from school for a good reason like illness, medical
appointments which unavoidably fall in school time, emergencies or other unavoidable causes.
Unauthorised absences are those which the school does not consider reasonable and for which no ‘leave’ has been granted. This type of absence can lead to the Local Authority using sanctions and/or legal proceedings.
Holidays in term time
Please think carefully before taking your child out of school during term time.
If you take your child on a two week holiday in term time, attendance for the year immediately drops to 95%.
Leave in term time will only be agreed where the Headteacher feels there are exceptional circumstances. Also, it is possible that leave will not be agreed when attendance already includes authorised absence and/or attendance is already causing concern.
You can request “leave in term time” for your child using a form available at the school office.
No more than 10 school days absence is likely to be granted in one school year. If the request is not approved by the headteacher, and the parent proceeds to take the pupil out of school, all the absence during this period will be recorded as unauthorised.
Please avoid taking a holiday in September as it is very unsettling for a child to miss the start of the school year.
No holiday will be authorised in May for children in Year 2 taking SATs or in June for children in Year 1 taking the phonics screening.
It is important to be on time too.
Classroom doors open at 8:45. Register is at 8:55am. Children arriving after 9am – 9:15am will be recorded as late. Children arriving after 9:15am are recorded as an unauthorised absence.
Attendance is being closely monitored by Mrs L Grayless and the Governing Body. If there are concerns we will be in contact with you to improve the attendance of your child.
Parents have a legal duty to ensure the regular and full time attendance at school, of registered pupils (Section 7 Education Act 1996) Failure to do so is an offence.
